Inventory doors and permissions
Begin with the doors that matter and the people who need them. Group access by role instead of issuing broad access simply because it is convenient.
A clear hierarchy makes a master key system easier to administer and safer to change later.
Control duplication
Unrestricted keys can be copied without your knowledge. Restricted keyways add an authorization process and make accountability far more practical.
Keep issue and return records, identify each key consistently, and review the list when roles change.
Treat key control as a process
Hardware alone is not the entire answer. Assign ownership of records, define what happens when a key is lost, and schedule periodic reviews.
